AM/NS India, a joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, will establish one of India’s largest greenfield steel projects with an investment of ₹1.4 lakh crore, reports The Economic Times. This ambitious project will be located in Andhra Pradesh's Anakapalli district and aims to create an integrated steel plant with a 17.8 million tonnes per annum (MTPA) capacity.
The project will roll out in two phases. Phase one involves the development of a 7.3 MTPA plant at an investment of ₹80,000 crore, requiring 2,600 acres. Phase two will add 10.5 MTPA at an additional cost of ₹60,000 crore and 2,000 more acres. The agreement was finalized in a virtual meeting between Andhra Pradesh IT Minister Nara Lokesh and ArcelorMittal CEO Aditya Mittal.
The facility will use green steel technology, supplying high-value sectors such as automotive to reduce import dependency. Key factors influencing site selection included land availability and port access near Nakkapalli, close to the Nakkapalli bulk drug park. AM/NS is also pursuing approval for a dedicated jetty to streamline raw material imports.
With groundwork anticipated to begin in January 2025, the project aligns with AM/NS’s vision to achieve a 40 MTPA production capacity by 2035.
