ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AM/NS India), a joint venture between global steel giants ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is gearing up to commission its state-of-the-art, 2 million tonne (mt) auto-focused cold rolling mill (CRM) in Hazira, Gujarat, starting March. The project, part of a $7.4 billion capital investment, aims to expand the upstream capacity at Hazira to 15 mt annually.

The new CRM facility includes two advanced production lines: a Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL) and a Continuous Galvanizing and Annealing Line (CGAL), both designed to produce high-strength automotive steel. These lines, expected to be fully operational by 2025, will incorporate proprietary technology from ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, enabling the production of steel with strength levels up to 1180 MPa in coated and uncoated varieties.

This development is set to significantly reduce India’s reliance on imported high-end steel for the automotive sector, which currently imports around 15-18% of its steel requirements. “The production lines will substitute imports and allow Indian automobile manufacturers to produce vehicles for global export markets, including the US and Europe,” said Ranjan Dhar, Director & Vice President – Sales & Marketing, AM/NS India.

The expansion aligns with the growing demand for high-quality, value-added automotive steel in India, which currently stands at 7.8 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) for flat steel and is projected to grow at an annual rate of 6-7%. AM/NS India will compete with major players such as Tata Steel and JSW Steel to cater to this demand.

Dilip Oommen, CEO of AM/NS India, stated, “This expansion plays a pivotal role in strengthening India’s steel ecosystem and boosting global competitiveness, furthering the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ initiative.”

At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025 in New Delhi, AM/NS India is showcasing its latest automotive offerings, including ArcelorMittal’s Multi Part Integration (MPI) solutions. These solutions focus on cost efficiency, modular designs, streamlined manufacturing, and eco-friendly production adhering to global sustainability standards. They also enhance vehicle performance through weight reduction and improved safety, meeting Bharat NCAP (BNCAP) norms.

Dhar added, “This initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision of ‘Make in India, Make for the World,’ empowering Indian automakers to manufacture and export vehicles to critical global markets.”

The Hazira CRM2 complex is a significant step in meeting the growing demand for advanced automotive steel and ensuring India’s self-reliance in the sector while positioning the country as a global manufacturing hub.
